I don't have the time to give to this, a topic very close to my heart, yet. But I responded to someone else's blog who lauded CCLI for chucking their emphasis on the most natural family planning available: ecological breastfeeding.
If there are just a few things I really want to get across about ecobf, they are these:
God bless you all!
If there are just a few things I really want to get across about ecobf, they are these:
- There are three ways to categorize breastfeeding for these purposes: cultural (includes bottles), exclusive, & ecological. Exclusive breastfeeding is *not* necessarily ecological breastfeeding. Ecological bf'ing excludes the use of mother substitutes, including, but not limited to: pacifiers, cribs, lots of holders like bouncers & swings & playpens, regular babysitters, etc. And it happens often. Very often.
- There may be very, very excellent reasons why a particular mother and/or baby cannot or chooses not to practice one or more of the ecobf principles. I judge none of them. Just like there are very, very excellent reasons why a particular mother may choose or have to have surgical birth or formula, and I do not judge them. I am only concerned with folks understanding the biological norm & why it should still be the norm, not with condemning anyone for legitimate exceptions to the norm. God knows I am in the least position to judge anyone's motivations or actions on anything.
- Very frequent suckling is the norm. It is normal for a baby, even a 1 year old, to nurse several times an *hour*. It is normal for even a 1 or 2 year old to nurse several times a *night*. It may not be desirable or possible in a certain case (say, a baby who physically cannot nurse while mother lies down), but it's important to understand that if your baby nurses every 2hrs at 6 months, there is nothing wrong with him! And if he nurses every 3hrs at 3 weeks, you may want to consider seeing if he might like to nurse more than that - that *is* biologically unusual (no matter what the ill-informed pediatricians & mothers-in-law say), and may lead to a gradually dwindling milk supply and/or early return of fertility.
God bless you all!
